Before we begin our studies of Vietnam, you are to complete TWO activities 1. Complete the map in the first page of your booklet. Your booklets will be collected at the end of the term for marking so please take extra care with your work. 2. Create a CANVA poster about life in Vietnam today. You want to include as much information in your CANVA as possible about Vietnam. Your CANVA should have a range of images, text, facts about Vietnam. Create a poster that plays off your personal interests e.g culture, religion, fashion, sport, music, art, travel, war, history. You are to save your CANVA and email it to me at the conclusion of the lesson. I will print them and they will become your title page for Term Two.

Frank Hunt
Frank Hunt is known as the "Frankie" identified in the Redgum song: "I was only 19". This song is often referred to as the anthem of Australia's experience of the Vietnam War.
Read the following article which discusses the source of the inspiration behind this song.
In addition to giving an insight into the attitude of young men towards their service in Vietnam, Schumann also offers an important opinion on the impact this war had on Australia.
using sources critically
An historical source: an item which provides us with knowledge and/or understanding of events and people from the past.
A Primary Source: a document or object created at, or soon after, the time that is being investigated eg, letters, photos, film recording, official document, artefact, newspaper report/article.
A Secondary Source: written or created after the time being studied usually by someone not immediately involved. Usually involves an interpretation of primary sources in order to offer an opinion of what happened and those involved eg books and articles published by historians, a film or documentary based on a historical event, a reconstruction of a past event.
In our introduction to this unit we have examined: * a media article from the Bega District News * YouTube clip of "I was only 19." * an article from a media website. Are these primary or secondary sources?
Each of these sources provides us with information about the song, the experiences of the young men involved and those who wrote the song. Can you identify elements where they agree and areas where they differ? When investigating events from the past we should draw upon a broad range of sources in an effort to enhance our knowledge and understanding. But we must take into account the context and purpose of these accounts to fully comprehend how they may contribute to our understanding.
Use the following framework to assess one of the sources we have used so far:
